A Cappella’s biggest committee yet gets set for its biggest year so far, with new positions Social Secretary and PR Officer introduced to bring the rapidly growing society closer together and keep the world abreast of our increasing number of gigs and events!

September 2013 – The Bluebelles Join the Society

Ready for the madness of Freshers’ Week, the society welcomes its 8th and newest group! The first new all-female group since the Sweet Nothings started the society way back in 2006, the Bluebelles add another string to the society’s bow, singing jazzy female barbershop classics.

13th – 21st September 2013 – Freshers’ Week

Freshers’ Week kicks off a tremendous year with the biggest line-up of taster events ever offered by A Cappella, including a dedicated Classical Taster and a Beatboxing Workshop from female beatboxing world champion Bellatrix. Audition sign-ups were at a record high, with Illuminations getting over 100 names down!

17th October 2013 – First Society ‘ACA-AWESOME’ Social

The first of many new full-society socials went off with a bang as over 100 members turned up to to a privately rented bar for cheap cocktails, crazy white t-shirt artistry and an intensely fought inter-group lip-synching battle royale, before heading to Arena with discounted queue-jump wristbands. Aca-awesome indeed.

3rd December 2013 – Whole Society Christmas Concert

All 8 groups got a chance to show off their first term’s work and impeccable Christmassy fashion sense in a fun and festive concert at St. David’s Church. With a sizeable audience of students and locals alike, the evening’s entertainment (not to mention mince pies and wine) went down a treat, with a typically boisterous social following promptly afterwards.

9th December 2013 – ECU Carol Service

Semi-Toned and the Sweet Nothings join forces to sing a heartwarming rendition of ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ at the Exeter Christian Union’s annual Carol Service, to an audience of 3000 in the local Exeter Chief’s Football Stadium!

28th February 2014 – Best in the South-West Competition

Following the VF-UK University Championship’s new video-submission free-for-all format, the A Cappella Society holds its own friendly regional competition, with the Bluebelles, Illuminations, Semi-Toned and the Sweet Nothings competing with local legends Aquapella from Bath University. With plenty of awards handed out on the night, Semi-Toned claim a narrow victory over their fearsome competition.

1st March 2014 – Harmonics and Madrigals Joint Concert

The society’s two more classically oriented groups put on their own concert at the Southernhay United Reformed Church, hosting a delightful a well-attended evening of sacred music with some secular classics thrown in for good measure.

8th – 9th March 2014 – Voice Festival UK University Championship Finals

With Illumintions, the Sweet Nothings and Semi-Toned all having made their video submissions earlier in the term, the boys claim a one of 12 spots at the Semi-Finals in London from a blisteringly competitive field of 23 country-wide entrants. With a characteristically off-the-wall set soliciting bemusement and delight from audience and judges alike, the boys progressed to the final with an award for ‘Outstanding Overall Performance’ and Edward Scott taking the ‘Outstanding Arrangement’ award. Against 4 other world-class groups, Semi-Toned came a hair’s breadth from victory, with their very own Michael Luya claiming ‘Outstanding Soloist’, but past victors Out of the Blue from Oxford claimed a deserved victory. Congratulations to all who took part in a memorable competition.

21st March 2014 – A Cappella Awards Ball

The society hosts its very first black tie event with members gathering at the Thistle Hotel for a wonderfully sophisticated night of great food, drinks and entertainment, and of course the all important awards. Members from all groups received accolades of the highest order in categories such as ‘Best Newcomer’, ‘Best Dance Moves’ and ‘Most Improved Group’. 27th March 2014 – AGM

After an exceptionally busy, the society flexes its collective political muscles for heated debate and tense voting at the AGM. After brief reflections on the society’s continuing social, financial and musical success from outgoing committee members, the democracy got underway, with six exceptional candidates claiming positions on the committee for 2014-2015. 1st June 2014 – Boat Party

Returning after its hugely popular debut in the previous year, the now annual A Cappella Boat Party saw the society (as well as esteemed guests Aquapella) set sail for a beautifully atmospheric sunset cruise round the mouth of the river Exe. With brief and appropriately unprofessional performances from all the groups, an excellent year was sent off in magnificent style!

8th June – Warsong

As part of a huge collaborative project to commemorate the centenary of the First World War, dozens of Exeter’s musical ensembles took part in huge continuous performance. Amongst them were our very own Bluebelles, stealing the show with renditions of popular early 20th century tunes.

31st July – 9th August 2014 – Edinburgh Fringe Festival

With the academic year having drawn to a close, two groups are still hard at work preparing spectacular shows for this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Semi-Toned return for their second year running after a critically acclaimed 5-star debut in 2013 (link), and the Sweet Nothings make their first ever run at the festival with a show sure to be the culmination of their fantastic year (link).
